Hummingbird Food - How to Make Your Own Hummingbird Food

Without a doubt one of the most popular bird feeder types to be found these days is a hummingbird feeder. These birds are unique in their ability to hover or even fly backwards, and their small size and hyperactive habits along with the fact that they can be found in many parts of the US make them a national favorite.
You can of course attract them with their natural food of the nectar from a wide range of plants like creepers or honeysuckle. These are good to have in the yard, but often the plants can't be put in sight of the house or yard where you would like to have the hummingbirds congregate, so a feeder near the house is a great option, and of course then you need hummingbird food. You can buy this food in a number of places, or it's simple enough to make yourself.
The most common recipe is to mix up a solution that uses one part sugar to 4 parts water. Cane sugar is preferred, with the white granulated form as the easiest to work with.
Start by boiling the water for a few minutes, to boil off the chlorine in the water and to help the sugar dissolve easily in the water. Stir in the sugar, and after it's dissolved let it cool for a few minutes. Store it in the fridge, and you are good to go.
There's no need to color it, natural nectar is colorless. Don't be tempted to use honey, it does not have the natural sucrose of nectar, and it tends to ferment which not desirable.
Don't use artificial sweeteners, as they have virtually no food value since they have no calories.
Be sure to your feeder is clean (in fact you should replace the hummingbird food and clean it a couple of times a week.) Add your food, and you should be ready for your hummingbirds.
