Using Glass Bird Feeders
Author: Mayoor Patel
If you have decided that you want to put a feeder for the birds into your garden you may feel that you want something different than the standard types. Anyone can have a tube feeder or the more common wooden platform bird feeders. Perhaps you are looking instead for a glass bird feeder. These are a more elegant, and often more expensive, type of feeder. Still, it may be your preference to have something a little different, a little more stylish that makes a statement instead of just a bird feeder sitting in your garden. They are also good to have because they tend to last longer than other feeders, are less likely to disintegrate with the elements and will not rot.
The only thing is if you choose one of these their care is a little more complicated than that of the other kinds of feeders. Glass bird feeders need to be cleaned more often since the bird mess will cloud it quickly. Therefore they must be taken down every few days and washed. The best way to do this is to only put in enough food to last a few days. This way you do not waste the bird food. Then when it is emptied you can clean it. Some people suggest having a second feeder so that you can always have one hanging up. Cleaning one of these feeders should be done with good strong bleach. But, If that is what you use you need to be certain you rinse it extremely well so that there is nothing in the feeder that could make the birds ill. The smell may also be strong enough to cause the birds to steer clear. It is therefore recommended that you let the feeder air for a couple of days before putting it back into use. This is another reason why having two feeders made of glass to rotate them for cleaning makes more sense. This may seem extreme but if you want to use bird feeders made of glass these are the steps you need to take.
One other benefit of glass bird feeders is that they seem to attract more birds than many of the other kinds. Perhaps it is being able to see the other birds so clearly when they are feeding or maybe because these are often colorful. Some people think it is because they can see the bird seeds more clearly. But, whatever it is if you hang one of these in your garden you will get to enjoy bird watching out your window.

You could get a empty milk cartoon cut a square out of it so the bird can fit and put bird food in it and hang it with some string onto a tree
Here’s a how-to that calls for egg white
* A terracotta pot
* 1 cup of wild birdseed
* 1 egg white (per cup of seed)
* 1 Oven bag (lining for mold)(tin foil works fine)
* 1 piece of wire (approx 20cm)
What you do:
1. Measure out about a cup of wild bird mix.
2. For each cup of seed you’ll need one egg white to bind it all together.
4. Whisk the egg white, then add birdseed.
5. Give a bit of a mix, mmm yummy! :p
6. Take the oven bag, and put it in the terracotta pot.
7. Place the bird seed in the pot – squash down nice and hard!
8. Cut a 20cm long piece of wire (coat-hanger type is fine), cut a loop in the end. Slide the wire all the way down through the hole at the bottom of the pot, then push the loop a couple of centimetres into the birdseed.
9. Next put it the oven for about an hour at 100 degrees C.
The egg white will dry out, leaving you with a moulded bell.
10. Take it out of the pot and remove the oven bag. Put a hook in it, and hang it on a tree!
Maybe it’s just me but I never thought those pest repellers worked on pests.
Easy answer–keep your cat indoors. Not only will it save numerous birds lives, but it will be healthier for your kitty. There are numerous diseases your kittly could get just by being outside and possibly coming into contact with other outdoor kitties.
Your cat has just killed a robin – so what? That’s life, it’s nasty but it happens. Cats are natural predators of birds, birds are natural predators of insects, insects eat people, people kill animals to eat, coyotes kill cats, humans kill humans, and humans kill and eat birds! Life isn’t perfect, horrible things happen.
There is no point in putting bells on cats or restricting their freedom, they have as much right to live their lives as you or I do. I’d either make it more difficult for cats to reach the bird feeders by putting them well away from anywhere cats can jump at them, or gradually stop feeding the birds, they’ll find another source of food for themselves. In my opinion your first loyalty is to your cat, you chose her to live with you, birds come and go, they are beautiful but they are not pets.
Rescue them if you can, but if you can’t just say “Sorry bird” and dispose of it, and thank your cat for the gift.
PS to the person who thinks amputating a cat’s toes because it follows it’s natural instinct to hunt birds – you really should never have a cat as you do not have one clue what you are talking about.
cat-bird conflict!! help!?
my cat is an over-zelious hunter, and although i love her to death she really bothers me when she stakes her post at the bird feeder. i watch birds, thats not a buffet! i have loaded bells on her collier but she is still way to good. help?
How Do I Build A Bell Bird Feeder?
Does the electromagnetic Pest Repeller bother outside birds at my feeders?
Example: Riddex Pest Repeller or Bell & Howell Pest Repeller. I read reviews on these, but read nothing on how they affect birds. I just don’t want them bothering my outside birds (which I take great pride in).
Our Cat has just killed a Robin.How can we stop her from killing birds and animals?
She already has a collar with a bell but somehow manages to catch them anyway.Is there anything else we can do as we love watching the birds on our feeders.
Does anyone know of an edible glue?
I want to make a bird feeder bell.
